I have had the pleasure to work with the great crew at a Canadian environmental NGO over the last few weeks, assisting them with their broadcast email. The part of this work I enjoyed the most was creating a workshop for the campaign staff on email best practices.  Download the checklists for the sessions here (PDF).

We did three sessions with this really smart and engaged crew: an introduction to their new email management system, a session on email basics (writing and designing email, as well as choosing a subject line) and finally a session on best practices around email fundraising and advocacy appeals. Of course, you can do months of study on these topics, so these workshops just touched on the basics.
